We’ve highlighted many attractions that are gems of the Central Valley, but the Forestiere Underground Gardens in Fresno is truly the greatest treasure of all.
Built over a period of 40 years starting in 1906, this underground home is one-of-a-kind and world famous.
It’s fascinating to tour the tunnels, rooms and courtyards, which were all excavated by hand.
And, summer is actually a great time to visit because you can experience the underground coolness in stark contrast to the Valley heat, which is what inspired Baldassare Forestiere to create this.
There are also a wide variety of trees and plants, each strategically planted for optimal growing conditions.
The tour includes a summer bedroom, a winter bedroom, a bath, a functional kitchen, a fish pond, and a parlor with a fireplace.
Our kids loved to imagine what life would be like here!
The tour guides are fabulous and very knowledgeable.
The tour is about 1 hour long, and we would suggest that kids be old enough to listen quietly to the guide and understand what they are seeing.
Tours are available April-November.
